This is a framed WWI recruitment poster featuring a funerary portrait of Field Marshal Frederick S. Roberts (Lord Roberts of Kandahar 1832-1914) over the call of “He did his duty. Will You do Yours?”
This is a framed original WWI Great War recruitment poster featuring a funerary portrait of Field Marshal Frederick S. Roberts (Lord Roberts of Kandahar 1832-1914) over the call of “He did his duty. Will You do Yours?”
Lord Roberts appears with his sword, baton, plumed hat and Victoria Cross placed in front; a Union Flag is draped above and a laurel wreath is positioned at the top. He was a decorated British soldier with over fifty years of service, including his positions as combat leader in the Second Afghan and South African Wars and commander in chief of the British Army. In advance of the First World War, Roberts was an avowed proponent of compulsory military service. Early in 1914, however, he contracted pneumonia and would die later that year. Following his death, his service and loyalty were used as an example for prospective British Army recruits.
The poster was printed by Johnson, Riddle & Co. Ltd., London, England and published by The Parliamentary Recruiting Committee, London, England, and the actual poster size is approximately 30 x 20in (75 x 49cm) and is mounted on a matting and framed under acrylic glass.
