This gentle portrayal of the Virgin Mary dates to the 19th-century, it depicts Madonna Del Dito or Our Lady of the Thumb and is based upon an earlier painting, which is often attributed to Florentine painter, Carlo Dolci (1616-1686). The painting gained its unusual name simply due to the appearance of Mary’s thumb from beneath her deep blue veil. It’s unclear why this was originally painted in but likely to relate to religious iconography. It is oil on canvas and the artwork is in good condition with an later applied modern lining, while the frame is structurally sound and ready to hang, it does have some gesso and gilt loss in places. The painting is unsigned on the front but the verso has an Italian annotation on the canvas dated 1892 and also some on the frame which we partially decipher as “Museo Napoli”.
