ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sven Palmqvist (1904-1984) embodied the graceful, functionalist forms, so typical of Swedish design, and also managed to create methods and techniques which made it possible to obtain new innovations for glass production. He expressed his love for the material: “With glass you are able to sculpture with light and with help from the sun you can paint with colours. Glass expresses so much more than other materials; it will never be affected – it is eternal, unchangeable”, Born in the glass district of southern Sweden, Sven Palmqvist started his career as a young student at the Orrefors engraving school in 1928. After further studies in Stockholm, Paris, Germany, Italy and the US, he returned to Orrefors where he started to develop the “Kraka” technique – where fish net patterned glass lies between layers of non coloured glass. He showed his work at the Paris exhibition in 1937 and in New York in 1939. In the 50’s Palmqvist invented a method of producing centrifuged glass. The liquid glass was rotated in a mould which pressed the glass towards the outer walls. This technique saved valuable hand finishing of the surface. He called this series “Fuga” and received a Gold Medal and the Grand Prix for it at the Milano Triennale in 1957. Palmqvist stayed at Orrefors until 1972 and later worked as a freelance designer.
